DUPLESSIS DIT NON AU MARIAGE COFFIN-PETRIE DUPLESSIS SAYS NO TO COFFIN-PETRIE'S MARRIAGE

WAS DUPLESSIS ODIOUS IN REFUSING WILBERT COFFIN PERMISSION TO MARRY MARION PETRIE ?

Last September, I had planned to underline the 50th anniversary of the passing away of Maurice Duplessis. But before doing so, I ordered, for a second reading, a copy of John Edward Belliveau’s The Coffin Murder Case, from Bibliothèque et archives nationales through my municipal library. I’m still awaiting that book.
Fortunately, while talking with Alton Price about this matter, he offered graciously to send me his copy. I just received it. Thank you, Alton.
A lot of people were angry at Maurice Duplessis for not having allowed Coffin and Petrie to marry before the fatal day. In the stacks of papers that I have read on this matter, I kept looking for an answer to this question. I have only found one. John Edward Belliveau gives a plausible answer in his book The Coffin Murder Case.

Click on the above pictures to read Belliveau’s explanations.

Me Fortin,

Miss Petrie n'a doublement pas porté chance à Wilbert Coffin;
elle,parlait trop,
lui,pas assez.

Me Fortin,

Me Fortin,

Anonyme a dit...

Anonyme a dit...

CRIME SCENE AT CAMP 26

July 23, 1953: The skeletons of Richard Lindsey and Fred Claar were found not far from the camps.

Their clothes had been removed after they had been shot. Source: Report of the Provincial Pathologist, Dr. Jean-Marie Roussell.

IMPORTANT! There were entrance holes in the clothing, BUT NO EXIT HOLES. Out of five shots into Fred Claar and two shots into Richard Lindsey, no bullets were ever found.

In 1996 at the launching of 'To Build A Noose' a municipal policeman in Gaspe volunteered the following information: 'A young boy, the son of the alleged killer, had told a friend that he had watched his father dig out the bullets'. We have no evidence to support this information, but the place name, Barachois, keeps recurring.

This fact would indicate that a low powered weapon had been used. Both Dr. Jean-Marie Roussell and the chemist, Bernard Peclet, in their testimony at the trial said that the murder weapon could have been a 38. A 38 is a hand gun, there is no 38 rifle.

In 1996 Sgt. Pierre-Yves Bourgault of the S.Q. detachment in Rimouski stated that it was known in police circles that the weapon used to kill Richard Lindsey and Fred Claar had been a 38 hand gun. Wilbert Coffin did not own a 38 hand gun.

In their testimony at the trial, Dr. Jean-Marie Roussell and the chemist, Bernard Peclet also said the murder weapons could have been a 30/30 rifle or a 30/06. Richard Lindsey had a 30/30 and Fred Claar had a 30/06; however, these rifles, according to experts, had not been fired since they were last loaded. - What was the motive of this contradictory testimony on the part of Dr. Roussell and Bernard Peclet?

Eugene Lindsey's skeleton had been found on July 18, 1953 in the vicinity of Camp 24. Searchers found pieces of his mackinaw in the bear droppings, indicating that his clothing had not been removed after he was killed.

Dr. Jean-Marie Roussell had been brought to Camp 24 before Eugene Lindsey's skeleton was removed. However, he was not taken to the murder scene at Camp 26 until after the bones of Richard Lindsey and Fred Claar had been taken to Gaspe in cardboard boxes. - Were there any qualified homicide investigators on this case?

Lt. Maurice Hebert had to draw his map from information given him by searchers. - How accurate is the map?

Another example of investigative incompetence, willful or otherwise, was the apparent lack of interest in the vehicle tracks with smooth tires and light cross chains that made more than one trip between Camp 26 and Camp 24. These tracks were first reported by searchers, David Johnston and Wilfred Carter.

Since these tracks did not go down as far as Camp 21 and out the 'Tom Brooks Road', the vehicle must have entered the woods and left by the oil well road near Murdochville.

In his Plaidoirie to the Jury, Maitre Raymond Maher showed a photo of the good tires on the Baker truck which Wilbert Coffin had parked at Camp 21 from June 10, 1953 through June 12, 1953.

In spite of the fact that Capt. Alphonse Matte had plenty of police at his disposal, there is no evidence that he made any effort to locate the vehicle with smooth tires and light cross chains.

The population of the Gaspe coast was not so dense that it could not have been found. The scattering of the baggage and the hiding of items in a hollow stump were obviously intended to confuse.

In a letter to the unofficially named murderer in 1994 I did not accuse him, but I complimented the killer on being smart enough to fool everybody. - There was no reply to the letter.

(In the near future there will be a posting re jeeps and the mystery letter from Pittsburg, PA.)

Anonyme a dit...

Anonyme a dit...

Me.

Clément Fortin a dit...

Anonyme a dit...

Anonyme a dit...

Extraordinaire!

Anonyme a dit...

Claude Leblanc

Anonyme a dit...

Me Fortin,
On semble vouloir s'écarter du sujet. On devrait revenir à l'essentiel.
M. Lamontagne

Anonyme a dit...

I agree with Mr. Price. the murderer was smart enough to fool everyone, and will continue to do so, for the next 50 odd years. I believe this case is too cold, and will never be solved.

Anonyme a dit...

Me Fortin :

Anonyme a dit...

Coffin was smart enough to fool those who today say he's not guilty, but he did not succeed to fool the jury.

Anonyme a dit...

BLUE JEANS:

Wilbert Coffin took (commonly known as 'bush pilfering') Fred Claar's valise out of the stalled Lindsey truck. The valise contained Fred Claar's binoculars and very probably a pair of jeans. However, no witness was presented at the trial who saw Coffin wearing the jeans.

In the pathologist's report you will find this statement concerning the jeans that Fred Claar was wearing when he was killed. Quote: "His blue jeans had been removed and both pockets had been turned out".

His other clothes that were lying beside his skeleton were also listed.

It should be noted that Wilbert Coffin took the valise to Montreal and then on to Val d'Or where he interested the geologists Kyle and Hastie in his mineral findings. He rode back to Gaspe with these two men and still had the valise.

His sister, Rhoda, eventually gave the valise to the police.

Wilbert Coffin was not a stupid man; he could read mining maps and stake claims. - Is it logical that he would have kept the valise if he had committed murder?

Furthermore, if he had been the killer why would he have left the other set of binoculars in a hollow stump?

Jeans: The jeans were considered important enough for Capt. Alphonse Matte to make a trip to East Freedom, PA, in order to check out Mrs. Clarence Claar's sewing machine!

There is no evidence that he even made a courtesy visit to the local State Police.

Mr. Price,
Explain why only the left pocket of old Lindsey’s trousers was turned over. While the pockets of young Claar’s jeans were not turned over. The answer may be that the robber-killer knew what that pocket contained and did not bother looking into it. But I would like your reaction to this question.
M. Lamontagne

Anonyme a dit...

Please, Mr. Price, BACK TO BASICS. Wilbert Coffin has been found guilty mainly because of the DOCTRINE OF RECENT POSSESSION. Do you know what doctrine of recent possession is, and what it means? This doctrine lies on jurisprudence, and also on statistics. In other words, it has been proven over and over thousand and thousand of cases all around the world that when a person is found shortly after a theft in possession of stolen marchandise, he or she is the robber and, if murder went along the robbery, he or she is until proof to the countrary the murderer. This is not a craprice of Duplessis or Alphonse Matte, it's a fundamental notion of our law, and our law is a science. The doctrice of recent possession obliges the person found with stolen merchandise to explain in plain language why he or she is in such possession. Coffin never gave satisfactory explanations for the merchandise of the victims found in his possession. His explanations, mostly given in his statutory declaration, have been proven to be lies.
Thank you.

- He told his girl that he's been paid by the Pa trio with some of their belongings, but he later told police that he's been paid with money
- He told his girl that the Pa trio were all by themselves when he left them, but he later told his mother that they were with 2 other men in a station wagon, and later told police that they were with 2 other men in a jeep

How could anyone say "His blue jeans had been removed" those bodies lay in the forest for 30 days, rotted away to bones... do any of you understand that many men could have passed by those dead men in the days after they were murdered, the woods was full of hunters...where is the proof that they were murdered in the woods? maybe their bodies were threw there after the fact... Wilbert coffins mistake was to be seen in the town of Gaspe with young Lindsey around the town and at the garages..it was a perfect time for whoever had it in for Lindsey, took this chance to kill, knowing well that coffin would be the last seen with Lindsey party...The only reason this case never got solved in the 50's is because after the law was informed coffin was last seen with the lindesy party, everyone stopped looking for evidence that could lead them to the real killers...I would really like to know the first person who gave coffins name as to "being seen in Gaspe with Richard Lindsey" I would start with that person while looking for the killer...
